Electronic Arts dropped Plants vs. Zombies 2’s “Modern Day” Part 1 on the 12th of January, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Just 12 days after the start of the year, and there’s another PvZ 2 world to beat! So cool!

The Plants vs. Zombies Wikia page was right, the next world is, indeed, called “Modern Day,” and it brought with it two zombies from the original game, cool new plants, as well as some cool gameplay concepts, with it. If you ever missed the pissy-faced Newspaper Zombie and the helium-powered Balloon Zombie from the original Plants vs. Zombies, well, they’re back in Modern Day.

As for plants, there’s the new “Shrinking Violet,” which shrinks zombies and lets your plants kill them all off easier, and there’s a series of “Shadow Plants,” which will get “powered up” under the “shadow” of the Moonflower. For example, the Nightshade will toss out its petals that slap zombies if it’s planted with the Moonflower. The Shadow-shroom’s poison, on the other hand, will cause the zombies it contaminated with its poison to contaminate other zombies.

Other than the retro zombies and the new plants’ nifty features, there’s the main feature of Modern Day: Sometimes, in the middle of a game, a portal opens up and summons zombies from other worlds. So you don’t just fight against the regular zombies and the retro zombies, you also fight against everyone from the Ancient Egypt world to Jurassic Marsh, and of course, the zombies from Modern day. So Modern Day is practically a mashup of all of the Plants vs. Zombies 2’s worlds, through the time portals.

Truth be told, Jurassic Marsh was way more exciting with all the amped-up plants and the crazy and sometimes cute dinos who could work for or against you. But, this is what Plants vs. Zombies 2 dished out this January, and for rabid fans, we’ll take anything. Upgrade your Plants vs. 2 app today!
