Microsoft Future Surface Phones Might Not Look Like Smartphones, Claims CEO

May 04, 2017 08:56 AM EDT

Microsoft smartphones might not appear like one claims CEO Satya Nadella. Nadella sat for a long interview with Marketplace's "Make Me Smart" discussing about the company's new education platforms. Even after launching its flagship devices Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, Microsoft isn't ready to give up on smartphones yet.

"So when you say, 'When will we make more phones,' I'm sure we'll make more phones. But they may not look like phones that are there today," claimed Nadella, BGR reported. He also mentioned that Microsoft is still committed to manufacturing smartphones, but they are trying to take a different approach similar to the Surface devices to boost the product category.

"What we've done with Surface is a good example. No one before us thought of 2-in-1s, and we created that category and made it a successful category to the point where there are more 2-in-1s coming. And that's what we want to do," Nadella mentioned. Nadella also said that the tech giant has picked up a particular area of focus on which includes management and security.

CEO Nadella also said that one particular feature they have been talking about is known as Continuum. According to Mashable, this would be an interesting device that would both be a phone as well as a desktop. But again tech experts feel that betting on this feature would rather be a loss. The device is rather little and allows users to attach a Windows Phone to monitor, mouse and keyboard for a desktop like feeling.

Sadly, the device wasn't conceived by the users and not embraced either. However, apart from Microsoft, Samsung is too is in the run for doing something similar with Galaxy S8 this year. Again, looking at the turn of events the tech biggie might be finding ways to merge smartphones and computers in the future. Again, the resulting device might not look an iPhone.
