‘Cyberpunk 2077’ Update: CD Projekt Clears The Air On Controversial Trademark Issue, Purely For Business

Apr 10, 2017 04:52 AM EDT

CD Projekt Red was surprised to find some folks lashing back after it filed for trademarks to the word “Cyberpunk” late last year in Europe. It seems that most have had misconceptions on the move though the group explains that using it was all about business, referring to their game “Cyberpunk 2077.”

Some Reddit users called the “Cyberpunk” trademark move as “uncool,” citing that anyone who may try to use it may eventually be sued. But according to CD Projekt Red, that was not their intent and the trademark filing was mere to protect their hard work on “Cyberpunk 2077.”

For those unfamiliar with “Cyberpunk 2077,” this is a massive project by CD Projekt Red that was unveiled back in 2012. With the focus right now on “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt,” the company has now come forward to somehow explain the whole misunderstanding. The trademark move is simply a precautionary measure – a practice that is common in business to safeguard them from competitors, Game Spot reported.

On the consumer end, this could be a hard thing to digest. “Cyberpunk 2077” is a game that could draw in competitor interest, some probably using the ploy of coming up with a name close to it. To widen the gap, planting a trademark on the name could work to their advantage. Hence, it is simply a defensive mechanism used by CD Projekt Red in the crowded gaming market.

Looking ahead, the whole “Cyberpunk” trademark issue seems a bit petty if folks don’t really understand how trademarks work. Regardless, CD Projekt Red is bent on giving “Cyberpunk 2077” the big push, hopefully, another game title that can co-exist and boom like “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.” If all goes well, there could be a “Cyberpunk 2” or even a “Cyberpunk 2078,” titles that somehow explain why the trademark was important for the company but in a business kind of way.
