How Secure Is Google Glass?

How Secure Is Google Glass? There have been many questions around the lack of fundamental security measures with Google Glass. Risks such as device passwords, pins or touch biometrics are currently not found with the device. Public safety officials have also caught to this areas of attention. Google Glass is expected to become available soon to the mainstream and this will also cause more employees to adopt wearing the device to work due to BYOD.

Earlier this year a man was hauled from a movie theater by the Department of Homeland Security over piracy suspicions. The man explained to Gadgeteer,  it contained prescription lenses, but left the device off. It was the third time he’d worn it at that theater. “About an hour into the movie… a guy comes near my seat, shoves a badge that had some sort of a shield on it, yanks the Google Glass off my face and says ‘follow me outside immediately’. It was quite embarrassing and outside of the theater there were about 5-10 cops and mall cops,” he says.

Gartner predicts sales of Google Android devices will top 1.1 billion in 2014. This expectation would make Google’s Android the first time to reach one billion. Smartphone technologies are rapidly changing industries. Gartner also forecasts smartphones and media tablets will contribute 84% of semiconductor revenue growth in 2013 and are the segments to watch. The company has expectations that Android will remain the most popular OS. The success of low budget smartphones have boosted this insight. Shipments from Apple are also to increase.

The risk is significant in that theft of the Google Glass device can cause serious data damage. Google Glass owners can also be prone to having their data hacked when connected to a public Wi-Fi system. This can also occur when the device connects to a smartphone and Wi-Fi is enabled through a hotspot. It is clear the device is prone to viruses. Being aware and educated of such risk areas is important to the Android user.
