MyFitnessPal Review: A Diet And Exercise Log To Let You Take Control Of Your Fitness

Nov 01, 2013 06:27 PM EDT

I would say that most people are looking to get in better shape, but many of them don’t know how. My Fitness Pal is an app on the Play Store that gives you the knowledge and resources to meet your fitness goals by your predetermined deadlines.

To set up, all you do is put in some key facts about yourself, like age, weight, gender, and lifestyle. Then you select your weight loss or gain goals and your time frame for completing your goal. You will then receive a plan outlining how many calories you need per day. Your next step is where the difficulty begins. In order for the program to work properly, you must input everything you eat from morning until night. The app comes with a label scanner, so if you eat something with a bar code you can easily enter it into your log; otherwise you can search for the food item in the vast database in the app. When you find your food, you select the serving size, then enter in your entire meal. If all of the entering food seems monotonous, that’s because it is. However, it also serves as good artificial willpower.

When you’re trying to decide whether or not to eat that snack, and you know you will have to enter it into My Fitness Pal, you may find that that snack doesn't seem so appetizing any more. If you want that snack anyhow, but your calorie limit doesn't allow it, My Fitness Pal has an exercise section that will let you enter in your specific exercise and the amount of time you worked in order to calculate your calories burned so that you can clear up some room for your cravings. There is also a section that breaks down your caloric intake by Fats, Carbs and Protein in order to see if you’re feeding yourself with a well-balanced diet. Of course, there is also a complete nutritional breakdown for everyday so you can make sure you get your micronutrients.

If you’re trying to break a plateau, maybe keeping a closer track of your diet might be the way to do it, and My Fitness Pal can be your tool to get moving again.
