DotEmu, the publisher of “Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap,” announced the launch for PC of the game on June 8 through Steam and GOG. The PC version is the last to roll out after the game was released on April 18 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

PCGamer notes that the remake of “Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap” for the Nintendo Switch was likely one of the prettiest remakes of an 8-bit platformer ever made. However, the game could also be played on its original pixel-style graphics.

But not all players like the ability to toggle the visuals of “Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap.” Some find it unnecessary and detrimental to the game. Locking the game to its original visuals removes the ability to make changes to the game. Other players also find the $20 price too much for a game that is almost three decades old.

Although the game website notes that there are other platformer adventures that are more fun and complex, players who have a lingering nostalgia for old classic games will enjoy “Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap.” Eurogamer notes that while the game keeps the basic form of animal-swapping Metroidvania source materials, its graphics and music are drastically overhauled.

Other changes to “Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap” include the introduction of Wonder Girl, a playable character. New difficulty levels were added to make the adventure easier or harder, depending on the preference of the player. According to Ewen Hosie, a contributor to the European game website, the game is a labor of love by Lizardcube, the developer, which sets an example for all retro remasters.

Other characters in “Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap” that can be played by gamers are Lizard-Man, Piranha-Man, Hawk-Man, Mouse-Man, and Lion-Man. Their unique abilities can be the used to uncover the deepest secrets of the land. Players could also input their old Sega Master System passcode to unlock all their old saves and progressions when they left the game in 1989.
