A known industry insider hinted on Monday that Qualcomm will update the Snapdragon 835 chipset with a Snapdragon 836. However, the leaker who mentioned the rumor on Weibo, a Chinese microblogging site, did not provide additional details on the system-on-chip. So far, Snapdragon 835 remains the top chipset on the market found on high-end Android smartphones.

If the rumors are true about the San Diego, California-based chipmaker developing another SoC, the speculated Snapdragon 836 will likely be released by the end of 2017, Android Headlines reports. The estimate is based on the timeline for the Snapdragon 821, an incremental update of the 820, which was announced in July and now powers the Google Pixel, Pixel XL, LG G6, and the HTC U Ultra.

The tech website adds that the speculated Snapdragon 836 will be based on the chip design of the Snapdragon 835, built on the Samsung 10nm FinFET process. But if it will be just a minor revision of the 835, the Snapdragon 836 could be unveiled in the coming weeks in time for a commercial debut by the end of 2017.

Besides the speculated Snapdragon 836, The Android Soul notes that Qualcomm’s website has a leak about a Snapdragon 845 chipset. LG reportedly is entering into a partnership with Qualcomm to use the Snapdragon 845 in its LG G7 flagship for 2018. Qualcomm reportedly will begin a trial production of the Snapdragon 845 which will be commercialized in 2018.

Since the Snapdragon 835 is found in the Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8 Plus, Xiaomi Mi6, HTC U11, and Sony Xperia XZ Premium, the rumored Snapdragon 836 may be used by major original equipment manufacturers. By the second half of 2017, Samsung and LG are planning to roll out high-end Android gadgets which could be powered by the 836. The list includes Google which is said to be developing several second-generation Pixel devices whose original 2016 models were powered by the Snapdragon 821.
