By Staff Reporter | Jan 12, 2016 05:04 PM EST

Nothing beats a good Match 3 game, and King Digital Entertainment has certainly proven that, with the billion-dollar success of the Candy Crush franchise. The Himalayan Times mentioned that the original Candy Crush game earned roughly $2.5 Billion USD between 2013 and 2015 alone. Over two years after its original release, and the game remains a top download in app stores across platforms.

This is no small feat for a game, as game fads come and go. While everyone else has moved on from Farmville, 4 Pics 1 Word, and everyone’s hearts have mended from the death of Flappy Bird, everyone is still apparently hooked on Candy Crush. This kind of enduring popularity and longevity of the Candy Crush franchise is a feat that is certainly worth applauding.

King has been so successful with building popular and profitable games that Activision Blizzard, Inc. acquired King for $5.9 BILLION US DOLLARS. With that, expect more brilliantly-crafted, simple but creative and compelling games from King Digital Entertainment under Activision Blizzard, Inc. The acquisition is expected to complete in the spring of 2016.

Building on the runaway success of Candy Crush, King has since released Candy Crush Soda Saga, and the most recent release is Candy Crush Jelly Saga. Launched with a grand worldwide release just this 7th of January, the app had actually enjoyed a soft launch on the Google Play Store on the 15th of December, and on the Apple App Store on the 21st of December. According to the app’s Google Play page, it has since enjoyed around 5,000,000 - 10,000,000 installs. No information is available for the downloads from the Apple App Store.

The gameplay is simple, as can be expected from a Match 3 Game: Match a certain number of candies, and the board gets cleared of these. In the Classic Candy Crush, matching certain numbers of candies, such as 4 or 5 in a row, or certain patterns, and you get special candies. These special candies can be matched with other candies of other colors, or with other special candies, and they have "special powers" which clear more tiles off the board. In fact, some combinations may enable you to clear the entire board, completely. In Candy Crush Soda Saga, matching a row of candies with a soda brings the soda level higher. As in the previous versions of the Candy Crush franchise, there are unique goals for every level, and progress is measured by how the gamer hits those goals.

In the case of Candy Crush Jelly Saga, matching a certain row of candies with jellies under them expands the area of the jellies. In the "Jelly Boss" mode, you'll race with the Jelly Queen in filling the board with your respective colors of jellies. In the "Puffler" mode, you'll have to find the Pufflers by matching the candies above them, just as you'd be finding the gummy bears in Candy Crush Soda Saga. The challenging part is that the Pufflers have a tendency to scurry off to other parts of the board if you only get to uncover them partially. Given these creative new challenges, King surely knows how to add fun to a simple Match 3 game.

In the case of Candy Crush Jelly Saga, though, King incorporated a series of fresh challenges: There are new “boss modes,” and the player contends against “The Jelly Queen.” The player and the Jelly Queen race to fill the board with their own jellies. Think Candy Crush meets “Connect Four”/“Four In A Row.”

King has always been all about taking seemingly ordinary games and “awesomizing” them. If you already enjoyed the adventures in the original Candy Crush, freeing the jelly bears and other challenges in Candy Crush Soda Saga, you will certainly enjoy the fresh adventures against the Jelly Queen and her cohorts in Candy Crush Jelly Saga.
