Samsung Announces 2014 Olympic Sponsorship

The Jamaican bobsleigh team will have an edge at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games thanks to Samsung: the company is providing the athletes with financial support as well as a range of devices to aid in their Olympic aspirations.

“As we embark on the final weeks leading up to the start of Sochi 2014, we are constantly reminded that some of the most inspirational stories are not about medals, but about how athletes must overcome incredible obstacles on their journey to the Olympic Games,” said Younghee Lee, executive vice president of global marketing, IT & mobile division at Samsung Electronics in a press statement. “Samsung is proud to join the community of supporters from around the world who have come together to support the Jamaican bobsleigh team.”

Samsung decided to lend a hand to the Jamaican bobsleigh team after learning that it was having difficulty raising the funds needed to compete in qualifying events ahead of Sochi. The team says that without Samsung’s support, they likely would not have made it to the Winter Games.

“Samsung’s valuable support to the Jamaican bobsleigh team last year, when we had no other support, gave us the opportunity to compete the races we needed to qualify. I am grateful for Samsung’s faith in us.” said Chris Stokes, President of the Jamaican Bobsleigh Federation. "This year, we are excited to hear that our two-man team has qualified to compete in Sochi and we are grateful to our fans and Samsung for their support and encouragement." Winston Watts, who is a member of the two-man bobsleigh qualifier, added "I hope our team could help deliver a message of inspiration and we will try our best in Sochi."

It’s unclear exactly which devices Samsung will be providing the athletes, but it’s a pretty safe bet that there will be Galaxy S4’s all around.
